WESTERN MONGOLIA

ALTAI TAVAN BOGD PARK – The name Altai comes from the Turkish word Ala-Tau, which means red mountain. The Altai Mountain range is located in one of the most beautiful, pristine and remote parts of the world, stretching across the Central Asia between China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Russia, and standing at the junction of several natural zones and cultures. The mountains are divided by several river valleys. There are hollows with semi-desert landscapes, Alpine peaks, narrow river canyons and broad valleys, highland tundra, and deep lime stone gorges, open steppes, permanent snow and glaciers and tracts of forest, as well as lakes, wild rivers, and waterfalls. Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, extends over 632.2 ha, including Tsengel, Altai, Ulaan Khus and Sagsai soum. The Tavan Bogd (Five Holy Peaks) chain includes the highest peak in Mongolia, Khuiten Uul (4353m), which borders China and Russia.

DAYAN, KHOTON, KHURGAN LAKES – Dayan lake is a moraine lake 18kms long and fed by small rivers and snow waters. There is a very popular stone statue known as “Dayan the Pious” and remains of the foundations of three square tombs near the shore. Khurgan Lake is alpine lake dotted with islands, is 22 km long and 28m deep in places. Six rivers feed it, and the Khovd River flows from its eastern end. Khoton lake; a fresh water lake nestled in a mountain depression surrounded by high mountains with forests. The large numbers of beautiful gulls and migratory birds live at Khoton lake in summer.

KHAR LAKE and BAYAN LAKE –  Khar Lake is at an altitude of 1980 meters above sea level and covers an area of 89 square km. Bayan lake is  located near the Bor Khyariin Els sand dune, is in the remote western part of Zavkhan province. The scenery is fascinating and lakes have good fishing opportunities.  Bayan lake has a beautiful fresh water because its water percolates through the Bor khyartiin sand and it creates many springs that are the sources of a small rivers flowing into Khungui river.

OTGONTENGER MOUNTAIN – Otgontenger is located at 100km east of Uliastai town on the plains. This is a sacred mountain eternally snow capped at 4031m. Above the tree line, tundra, alpine-sedge meadows and highland swamps are attractively present high mountain landscape. The mountain is approached across a stony area, which opens up to a  glacial lake called Badar Khundaga.
