CENTRAL MONGOLIA

ELSEN TASARHAI DUNES – It is a beautiful place with many different forms of natural landscapes; combination of sand dunes, steppe and mountains. Elsen tasarhai is surrounded by the Khungu Khaan Mountain which has the ruins of Erdene Khambyn Khuree. The monastery is nestled in the mountain. The enlightened Bogd Gegeen Zanabazar, a religious leader was founded these Uvgun and Zaluu temples for his teacher. The soldiers of Oirad nobleman Galdan boshigt destroyed the monasteries and assassinated the monks in 1688.

KHARKHORIN – Kharkhorin was an ancient capital of Great Mongolian Empire. It was established on the bank of Orkhon River in 1220. Khubilai Khaan, a grandson of Chinggis Khaan moved the capital to Beijing of Yuan Dynasty. Only turtle rock is remained for 800 years. Erdenezuu Monastery was built on the ruins of Kharkhorin in 1586. The monastery is surrounded by white walls with 108 stupas. There are precious collections of Buddhist paintings, religious objects, ritual dresses for Tsama dances.

ORKHON WATERFALL – Orkhon waterfall is located in the Orkhon river, the longest river of Mongolia which flows 1120km. The local name of the waterfall is Ulaan Tsutgalan and the height is 24m. This waterfall was formed by a combination of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes about 20 000 years ago. The water level of the waterfall depends on the annual rainfall.

TSENKHER HOT SPRING . Tsenkher hot spring is a sulphur spring that emerges from the ground at 85 Celsius degree. It is located on 1860m above sea level and was outfitted for visitors in 1996.  It is rich with different stones of Mesozoic includes chalk white stones and kidney stones.  The facility includes outdoor and indoor baths, showers and accommodation.

TAIKHAR ROCK – Taikhar Rock is 16m high boulder which is located on the bank of Tamir River.  According to Mongolian folk myths, a giant snake came out from the ground and scarred the people. Local people asked a favor from Bukhbilegt who was a great wrester and warrior to destroy the beast. Bukhbilegt took a rock from Bulgan Mountain and threw on the head of the snake named Taikhar. The word “head” is called as Tarkhi in Mongolian language.  The rock has a over 150 inscriptions and engravings in Turkish, Uighar, Tibetan and Mongolian. Unfortunately, most of them seem to have barely appeared as time passes.

EIGHT LAKES – Naiman nuur is located in the Khangai Mountain in Central Mongolia at 3163m above sea level. The area of Eight Lakes was created by volcanic eruptions centuries ago. The lakes located in a high mountain area with sub alpine mountain meadows and forests of Siberian Pine and Siberian Larch. The lakes are named Shireet, Khaliut, Bugat, Khaya, Khuis, Onon, Doroo and Bayan-Uul. Two of the smaller lakes are completely dried up, the second largest lake Khuis Nuur is dried up to ten percent.
